Patient Participation Groups (PPGs)

Patient participation is a unique partnership between patients, GPs and practice staff as a way to work together to improve healthcare services within the practice and across other services in the Tameside and Glossop area.

Patient participation refers to patients taking an active interest in their healthcare. Most PPGs operate within GP practices and their priorities are developed and agreed by the patients themselves in order to meet the needs of the practice population and to reflect the interests and energies of the participants themselves.

The format of meetings differs from one PPG to another, but they usually meet on a regular basis and everyone who attends is given the opportunity to contribute.

PPG activities range from encouraging positive change within the practice and across wider health services, to organising events in partnership with the practice aimed at involving other patients. Some of the successes had by groups across Tameside and Glossop include:

  • Helping fundraise to purchase a defibrillator
  • Launching language support workshops with the help of Hyde Community Action
  • Implementing two disabled parking bays outside a surgery for Blue Badge holding patients
