The work of our PNGs
Hyde Patient Neighbourhood Group self-care day
Each year, Hyde & Hollingworth Patient Neighbourhood Group (PNG) hold their own ‘Self Care Day’ event, whereby members and volunteers show up with leaflets, information and representatives to chat to members of the public to promote healthy lifestyles. On Saturday 19 November 2017, this took place at Hyde Market.
Patient Neighbourhood Groups work to promote the ways that patients can get involved with GP services and contribute to their improvement, design and delivery. They also pull together other local health organisations for events such as this one.
Representatives from a number of local services and organisations held a spot on the stall – the Bowel Cancer Screening service; the Grafton House Activity Centre; Manchester Metropolitan Nursing and more. Each representative has the chance to talk with members of the public to give advice, answer questions and signpost further information on particular health issues and how to prevent them by making healthy choices.
The group were prepared with a range of information leaflets, posters and demonstrations. Representatives had healthy recipes to show to people, demonstrated the Food Smart App to show people how certain foods can have hidden fat and sugar content. They also displayed information provided by a number of local organisations such as The Shed, Tameside Be Well Service and My Medication Passports.
The event saw strong feedback from all the organisations involved. What made the event such a success according to two local GPs, was the benefit of being able to chat to people in a more comfortable setting to get them thinking about healthy lifestyles.
As a result, some members of the public learned to how take their own pulse to look for irregularities while others signed up to join in on physical and social activities.
The next event, due to take place in June has invited Age UK, Mind and Tameside Dementia Alliance.
